Dorian Gray is an only REFLECTION!
When I hold this book, I see every time the soul of Oscar Wilde in those characters! He wrote book with the pieces of his broken soul. While you reading that you can find the clues to prove that idea. Let me explain that.

Dorian Gray is the major character of that book and he is very beautiful and young. Lord Henry is aged man but he is very clever and he is a sort of philosopher. Basil is a good man who is an artist and homosexual. These are the major properties of the characters that are in the book and all of them is in the high society in the west England.

They have connections and the conflicts because of their ideas and and willings. Dorian Gray is the purest one in the beginning like Oscar Wilde's soul but he is affected with the ideas of Lord Henry Who is hedonist and he sold his soul to devil and the picture and Dorian's soul exchanged the souls. Basil is the homosexual ones and he is an artist but he is more experienced than Dorian and he warned Dorian. Main idea was that; Lord Henry is an only director and he never lived the life that he tell. He is jelaus of Beauty but he never be the man like Dorian.

Every character has the piece of clues that belongs the Oscar Wilde. Some of them has a pressure of being homosexual some of them influenced the hedonistic ideas of Victorian England and the some fo them is the real wronged. He is the junction of every one of them.

  2. I totally agree with your opinion. From my side, every author lives like the characters in his or her book. Surely there is something in authors' mind, which makes them to write.

For Oscar Wilde example, we can say that he wrote this book with his experiences. We can see the character behaviors as examples of his life. He believes in something and he wrote. He shared his opinions in a book.

He was Basil, because Basil believes in magic of human, magic of beauty. He was Lord Henry, because L. Henry lives with his own heart, he does everything that he wants. He was Dorian, because he is pure and naive.

  3. Like I said in the Burcu's post, the main character of that book is Oscar Wilde(as usual:]). So, while we read it, we already were waiting this. Oscar Wilde has different ideas according to Victorian England like homosexuality. However, can he say anything about it? Of course, no. So??? He will decide to write a book. So did he. This book wasn't welcomed well like he expected but he succeed to reveal in his soul, he succeed to tell to people. Maybe, he couldn't get anything as a result but according to him, he arrived this goal and he won. I congratulate Çağatay to figure out this detail.

  4. As you said NoSTaC, Oscar wilde wrote this book and arrived his goal. This is similar with the Basil and the picture of Dorian Gray. We can see the similarity if we think the portrait is his book and Basil is him. I believe that there was no thought to be a famous with writing a book in Oscar Wilde's brain. He wrote this book to show the system that he believe it is wrong. So I belive he did the right thing. This would be the best way to share his ideas.

  5. I think that he must be very brave and resourcesful if he could actually have this book published. As MariV said, what he did was right, but I don't think he had many people like his book at that time because of this reason. Most people don't like books that point out important things, so I don't know if we can say that he "won" when we consider this detail.

  6. I'm not agreeing with you guys because ı think he is a guy which is so smart but in his era he tries to fluence all of the england to make them seems and think like him but it will never happen. also some of your thoughts true because when you're reading that book you feel this guy's feelings exactly which is infamous and includes homosexuality. you said he has characteristics from his characters. that is as true as your name is utku XD when I'm reading that post, ı think Mr. Wilde has homosexuality from Basil, genius from Lord Henry, and impressionable from Dorian also he has reality from Sibyl. I want to talk about your quote because that is not exactly true. in that era artists use models and memories about models and for me the true art isn't creating with models you can do that with a trash or an apple. artist must to have ability of make something beautiful from nothing.
